Reception

A great start for your child begins here.

Whitehouse Primary is a small, caring, inclusive school. Every child is known and supported. We keep class sizes small in all year groups, so pupils get more attention and calm classrooms.

We are a new school in all but name

Over the last year, Whitehouse Primary has been transformed.  We have a new Headteacher, fresh energy and a clear vision focused on improving outcomes for every child.

Come and see the difference for yourself — meet our team, visit our modern classrooms and explore our bright, welcoming learning spaces.

We are a new school in all but name. Come and see the transformation for yourself.

Why choose our Reception

Our Reception class offers:

  • Small classes in all year groups – more time, more attention, better relationships.
  • Excellent Early Years outcomes – strong progress in phonics, reading and early maths.
  • A bespoke, engaging curriculum – practical, creative and built around each child’s interests.
  • Modern classrooms and resources – light, flexible spaces designed for young learners.
  • Excellent outdoor space – including a secure Early Years garden for play and exploration.
  • Strong pupil–teacher relationships – every child is known and supported.
  • Highly regarded SEND provision – early identification and tailored support for individual needs.

What your child will experience

Our Reception curriculum builds curiosity, independence and confidence through play and discovery.  Every day includes a balance of child-led exploration and focused adult-led learning.

Children will:

  • Explore indoors and outdoors through purposeful play.
  • Join phonics, reading and number sessions at their own pace.
  • Learn to share, take turns and build friendships.
  • Develop early writing and communication skills.
  • Take part in music, art, PE and outdoor learning activities.

We celebrate every step of progress and make sure children enjoy coming to school.

How we help children settle

Starting school is a big step for children and parents. We make the transition calm and supportive.

We offer:

  • Stay and Play visits before September so children can explore the classroom with parents.
  • Welcome meetings for parents and carers to meet the team and ask questions.
  • Home visits or early conversations where helpful to ease transition.
  • A phased start so every child feels secure and happy from the first week.

Our nurturing staff are always ready with a smile, a helping hand and time to listen.

Life beyond the classroom

Reception pupils enjoy a range of experiences that bring learning to life.

Opportunities include:

  • Educational visits linked to class topics.
  • Visitors who inspire curiosity and ambition.
  • Themed weeks, charity events and performances.
  • Trust-wide celebrations such as Volunteer Week and Green Careers Week.

We believe children learn best when they’re engaged, active and proud of what they achieve.
