Our Approach to Behaviour

At Whitehouse Primary School, we believe in fostering a safe, positive, and respectful learning environment. Our Relationship and Behaviour Policy is designed to encourage respect, responsibility, and understanding among pupils, staff, and the community.

Key Principles of Our Behaviour Policy

We are committed to:

  • Encouraging Positive Behaviour: We promote mutual respect, self-discipline, and social responsibility.
  • Supporting Emotional Development: Our approach aims to help pupils develop empathy, tolerance, and consideration for others.
  • Building Positive Relationships: We use a restorative approach to address behaviour issues, focusing on repairing relationships and moving forward.
  • Working with Families: We partner with parents and carers to create a consistent, supportive approach to behaviour.

Our Behaviour Standards

Our Behaviour Policy sets clear expectations:

  • Respect for Everyone: Pupils are expected to treat others with kindness and respect.
  • Responsibility for Actions: We encourage pupils to understand how their actions affect others.
  • Consistent Approach: Staff use positive reinforcement and reminders to guide behaviour, promoting a calm, non-confrontational atmosphere.

Positive Reinforcement and Rewards

We celebrate and encourage good behaviour with a variety of rewards:

  • Verbal Praise and Acknowledgements: Positive feedback from staff, including nods, smiles, and encouraging words.
  • Class Dojo Points and Stickers: Recognising daily achievements.
  • Achievement Awards: Weekly “Star of the Week” certificates presented during assemblies to celebrate exceptional effort and behaviour.

Managing Behaviour Challenges

We approach behaviour challenges with a restorative focus:

  • Restorative Conversations: Used to help pupils understand the impact of their actions and make positive choices.
  • Calm Reflection Time: Pupils may have quiet time to reflect if they need to reset their behaviour, followed by a restorative discussion with their teacher.
  • Inclusive Approach: For ongoing challenges, pupils may have personalised support plans developed with parents and staff.

Special Support for Pupils with Additional Needs

Our behaviour approach is tailored to meet the diverse needs of our pupils:

  • Flexible Restorative Techniques: We adapt our restorative practices for younger pupils and those with additional needs, using tools like emotion cards and small group discussions.
  • Collaboration with Parents: We work closely with families to support pupils’ behaviour and emotional growth.
  • External Support: We liaise with specialists when needed to provide further assistance for pupils with specific needs.
